all projects start with a need

  • brand visibility and respect

the wizarding world is such a huge franchise, it’s hard to make sure both brands are represented when out weighed. how can we bring the magic of barkbox?

  • rules rules rules

working within strict guidelines with partnershps is always a test. dogs can’t destory characters, use magic, toys can fly. we worked within the guidelines to create beautiful campaigns that spoke true to both brands being represented.

  • two shoots. 2 videos. 7 campaigns.

how can we reuse the same assets and make them feel fresh over multiple campaigns.

key factors:

the two brands, BarkBox and Super Chewer have distinct needs to fulfill. the above sample is for BarkBox, where the dog is a smaller mutt. We focus in on moments of play and the products. at the end we wanted to focus on the box showing all the toys in the foreground while the human and dog interact in the background.

human casting

casting isn’t just about representing the correct dogs and playstyles.

the human interaction is just as cruical. we had to cast a person who looks like they play with dogs, who isn’t afraid of dog play styles. this is more challenging than one would think.

the clothing is also a heavy player in this game. we wanted colors that were reminiscent of the wizarding world. for barkbox we choose yellows because the dogs are more energetic and friendly like a hufflepuff. for superchewer deep red like gryffindor to express their stubborn but playful nature. we also wanted to be sure the clothes look like someone who plays with dogs, nice, but you’re not afraid to get diry.

dog casting

fun, loud, playful, and trustworthy.

we needed to accomplish a lot so we needed to hire dogs we knew would be able to do what we needed. all dogs being cute is just an added bonus.

lots of stories and learnings from casting dogs if you ever want to hear them.

art direction : video

we had SO. MANY. COOL. ideas for this particular project. the writer and i were big fans of the world and wanted to create the most magical moment for our subscribers.

however with rules and regulations, we ended up with the dogs playing at home. still beautiful, but not as magically as we had once hoped.
